According to Statista, in 2020, electric passenger car registrations accounted for almost 18% of the car registrations market, and looks set to overtake diesel in the next year or two. And according to Fiat Professional, 35% of van drivers are considering switching to an electric van.
With many more electric vehicles on the road than there ever has been, should you be considering an electric van as your next vehicle purchase? Below we’ve listed our top benefits for switching.
Better for the environment – firstly and arguably the most important point… you’ll be helping to cut down on harmful gasses, so think about how you’ll be helping the environment, especially if you have multiple vans on the road and make the switch over to electric over time.
Cheaper running costs – Electric vans are cheaper to run compared to diesel vans. So, you’ll save money longer term, meaning less business expenses. It can cost as little as 2p per mile to run an electric van!
Cheaper to maintain – with fewer moving parts, you may not experience costly maintenance and repairs that you’d get with a diesel or petrol vehicle.
Government incentives – there are various incentives available such at the Government Plug-in Grant which is worth up to 20% of the listed price (max £8,000). Plus there’s lower vehicle tax to pay compared to diesel alternatives
An easier drive – with no gears to change, it’s an easier, smoother drive. They’re fast and efficient, so you don’t have to worry about going slow down the motorway to the next job or meeting.
Perception – having electric vans or vehicles for your business will no doubt boost the image of your business as being environmentally conscious.
Other things to consider
Of course, there are other things to consider. Many van drivers may be concerned about running out of battery power before they reach their destination or a charging point. And whilst many drivers not covering more than 80 miles in a typical day, the battery-operated vehicle would still be a great alternative. For those out on the roads for longer, such as delivery drivers, until battery technology improves and the range you can travel extends, this could slow down your journeys with time out needed to recharge.
But manufacturers are constantly developing their electric vehicle options, with Peugeot, Renault, Citroen and Nissan already offering electric van ranges with Ford expected to launch a range this year. So if you’re considering making the switch, do your research, and keep your eye out for latest announcements in this market to make sure you get the deal and van that’s right for you.
